What is the Diffing Algorithm?

The diffing algorithm is a key part of React’s Virtual DOM reconciliation process. It allows React to efficiently determine the minimal set of changes needed to update the real DOM when a component’s state or props change.


How Does the Diffing Algorithm Work?

  1. Virtual DOM Representation

    • When a component’s state or props change, React creates a new Virtual DOM representation of the component.
    • This new representation is compared with the previous one to detect changes.
  2. Element Identification

    • Each element in the Virtual DOM is assigned a unique key (usually provided in lists).
    • React uses these keys to efficiently track elements and match them between the old and new Virtual DOM representations.
  3. Tree Diffing

    • React performs a tree diffing process, comparing the new Virtual DOM tree with the previous one.
    • It identifies which elements were added, removed, or updated by recursively comparing nodes in both trees.
  4. Component Reconciliation

    • If a difference is found between the old and new Virtual DOM, React determines the minimal set of changes required to update the actual DOM.
    • This process is known as reconciliation.
  5. Minimal Update Operations

    • React generates a list of operations such as:
      • Inserting new elements
      • Removing elements
      • Updating properties of existing elements
    • The goal is to apply only the necessary changes rather than re-rendering the entire UI.
  6. Batched Updates

    • React batches multiple updates together to optimize performance and reduce unnecessary DOM manipulations.
  7. Updating the Actual DOM

    • Finally, React applies the identified changes to the actual DOM, keeping it synchronized with the Virtual DOM.
